In a program, organized by Spic Macay IITK chapter (a voluntary organization which promotes Indian culture for the youth), on Manipuri Dance, no need to say that it was superb but while watching, it created ripples of thoughts in my mind and made me think.
This Dance program made me think how diverse we are, how unique we are, how rich and magnificent cultural heritage we have. I, born and brought up in Maharashtra, tried to relate their sense of dressing, enacting ornaments to culture which I have seen, which I know. And to my surprise I found connections which actually made me to sit and watch .Actually I had planned to leave early as I was sure that I will get bored but to my surprise I watched it till end.
I found sari there but it had a different and unique way of wearing. I found Manipuri ornaments or instruments were similar to our own Maharashtrian tradition. Dholaki was there with two of its Manipuri versions which were the real star of whole event.
Songs that were sung were alien but the gestures, the emotions were understood like I have known it since birth. Clearly proving the fact that how insignificant words are at few moments.
The elegance and delicacy of dance was so effective in conveying the emotions. Really portraying the delicacy of a human relation how really they should be not like the one which we see and may be experiencing in our day to day life.
The youth of this country needs to be given an exposure to this real culture of India which will make them at least aware of a newer dimension and reality about our own things and reality about who we are.
Like me till today I did not have disrespect about such things but felt like these things are not meant for me. But a single exposure of today made me think so much.
Kudos to Indian culture for its diversity and uniqueness for having such a rich culture in its each part which itself is renowned.
As said by today’s maestro every art evolves through its own needs and availability so this diversity needs to be understood before judging and acknowledging it.
That’s why we say we have unity in diversity.
